AI Was Supposed to Build Super Reps. We Bought the Wrong Half.
Jason M. Lemkin asked a fair question last week. AI was supposed to turn AEs into Super Reps. The tools all showed up. Meeting prep. Follow-up. AI SDRs. Auto-filled CRM. AI SEs. So where are the Super Reps?
He's right. We just bought the wrong half.
Read his list again. Every item happens around the deal. Before the call. After the call. None of it touches the conversations where the deal is actually won or lost.
Nobody loses a deal because the CRM notes were late. Or because their AI prep tool missed that the champion is really into bird watching.
I see it on my own board. Same sales motions. Same ICP. Same playbook, every AE. Same couple of names at the top every quarter. Highest conversion. Top revenue. Smallest discounts on the team.
When we went back through our wins and losses, the gap wasn't one big mistake. It was a dozen small ones, spread across the whole cycle. Pain named but never priced. The economic buyer deferred until "after the demo." Pricing sent before the technical win. A discount given by email with nothing traded back. A close plan that's really just "let's hold off and see."
None of those are prep problems. The CRM records every one of them, accurately, and does nothing about it.
That's why the best are crushing it even more. Productivity AI is a multiplier. Point it at a rep who already runs the full cycle well and you get more of a great rep. Point it at a rep who skips steps and you get the same rep with tidier notes.
The half that builds better reps is coaching.
At Pipe17 we built Sales Motion Coaches with Claude (Anthropic). Each one carries an ideal sales cycle reverse-engineered from our real wins and checked against our losses. Six stages, each with exit criteria. If a deal can't pass them, it isn't in that stage, whatever the CRM says. Plus our Value Based Selling methodology, ICP fit, and the loss patterns that have cost us deals before.
A rep drops in a call the moment it ends and gets scored on that specific deal. What stage it's really in. Which exit criteria are missing. Which loss pattern they're starting to repeat. All while there's still time to fix it.
It doesn't save anyone an hour. It's not supposed to.
It's also the best onboarding tool I've ever had. A new rep gets coached on every call from week one, against what our best reps do, instead of waiting months to absorb it by osmosis.
What it can't teach is what top reps bring on their own. Creativity. Reading the room. Grit. Hard work. Relationships. The gut feel that tells you a deal is real before the data does.
That's still the rep. It always was.
So maybe Super Reps was never the realistic goal. Closing the gap between your top reps and everyone else is.
